LASER OPTICS & PHOTONICS TECHNOLOGY

Karsten König is C4 Full Professor and Head of the Department of Biophotonics and Laser Technologies at the Saarland University, Germany and president of the company JenLab GmbH. He gained the PhD degree in physics as well as the habilitation degree in cell biology from the University Jena. Prof. König published about 500 scientific papers (2x Nature) in the field of biophotonics and laser material processing, filed 25 patents, and pioneered fluorescence lifetime imaging, femtosecond laser nanoprocessing, femtosecond laser transfection, and clinical multiphoton tomography. His work was awarded with the SPIE Prism Award, the Leibinger Innovation Award, the Pascal Rol Award, the Award of the International Society of Skin Pharmacology and Physiology, the Technology for the Human Being Award of the Fraunhofer Society, the Kortum Motivation Prize, the Feulgen Prize, The New Economy Award, and the IAIR Award as European Man of the Year 2014. In 2015 he became a fellow of the International Society SPIE. Karsten König focuses on biomedical and technical applications of femtosecond laser technology. His current projects include Sub-100nm-Nanomachining with 10 Femtosecond Laser Pulses, Optical Reprogramming by laser transfection, Testing the biosafety of nanoparticles in cosmetic products, and Multiphoton Tomography of astronauts to understand skin ageing effects in space.

Andreas Mandelis, FRSC, FCAE, FAPS, FSPIE, FAAAS, FASME, DF-IETI, PhD,is a Full Professor of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering; Electrical and Computer Engineering; and the Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering, University of Toronto. He has been the Canada Research Chair in Diffusion-Wave and Photoacoustic Sciences and Technologies (2008-2022). He is theDirector of the Center for Advanced Diffusion-Wave and Photoacoustic Technologies(CADIPT) and of the Institute for Advanced Non-Destructive and Non-Invasive Diagnostic Technologies (IANDIT) at the University of Toronto. He has also been (2012-18) a National 1000-Talents Professor at the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China in Chengdu. Professor Mandelis has received numerous national andinternational prizes and awards including the APSKeithley Award in Instrumentation Science, the Discovery Award in Science and Engineering (the Ontario Premier’s Innovation Award), the ASME 2009 YeramTouloukian Award (and Medal) in Thermophysics, the Senior Prize of the International Photoacoustic and Photothermal Association, the Canadian Association of Physicists (CAP) Medal for Outstanding Achievement in Industrial and Applied Physics and the CAP-INO Medal for Outstanding Achievement in Applied Photonics. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, Academy of Sciences, and a Fellow of theCanadian Academy of Engineering. In 2014 he was elected Killam laureate, recipient of the Killam Prize in Engineering, one of Canada’s highest academic prizesawarded annually by the Governor General of Canada.In 2017 he was the recipient of the Inaugural Canadian NDT Research Award, Canadian Institute for Non-Destructive Evaluation (CINDE). Professor Vladimir G. Chigrinov is Professor of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology since 1999. He is an Expert in Flat Panel Technology in Russia, recognized by the World Technology Evaluation Centre, 1994, and SID Fellow since 2008. He is an author of 6 books, 31 reviews and book chapters, about 317 journal papers, more than 668 Conference presentations, and 121 patents and patent applications including 36 US patents in the field of liquid crystals since 1974. He got Excellent Research Award of HKUST School of Engineering in 2012. He obtained Gold Medal and The Best Award in the Invention & Innovation Awards 2014 held at the Malaysia Technology Expo (MTE) 2014, which was hosted in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on 20-22 Feb 2014. He is a Member of EU Academy of Sciences (EUAS) since July 2017. He got A Slottow Owaki Prize of SID in 2018 chigrinov-wins-2018-slottow-owaki-prize). He is 2019 Distinguished Fellow of IETI (International Engineering and Technology Institute). Jin U. Kang, Jacob Suter Jammer Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, is an expert in optical imaging, sensing, fiber optic devices and photonic systems. He holds a joint appointment in the Department of Dermatology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and is a member of Johns Hopkins’ Kavli Neuroscience Discovery Institute andLaboratory for Computational Sensing and Robotics. Kang chaired the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering from 2008-2014. Kang’s research is focused on developing novel optical techniques and devices for a wide range of biomedical applications. Kang has been developing optical coherence tomography (OCT) and other 3D imaging techniques for image-guided surgical applications; these systems have enabled the development of microsurgical and robotic tools that allow safer, more precise surgical outcomes. Kang’s group was the first to implement and demonstrate real-time 4D OCT systems that could allow surgeons to monitor surgical sites in 3-D video during surgery. Kang has also been working to create a “smart” tool system to help surgeons more accurately and safely perform microsurgeries in areas like retinal surgeries, cornea transplants, vascular surgeries and cochlear implants. He recently launched a JHU FastForward startup company, LIV (Live Imaging Vision) Med Tech Inc., to work on these image-guided robotic tools. Other projects involve building real-time Doppler 3-D imaging systems for intraoperative assessment of surgeries like carotid endarterectomy and cerebrovascular surgery. A holder of over 30 patents and 200 refereed journal and over 250 conference publications, Kang was a Program and General Chair of CLEO A&T from 2018-202. He is a fellow of the Optical (formerly called Optical Society of America,)the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE), and the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE).He is a recipient of the ONR Young Investigator Award, the Australian Institute of Advanced Studies Fellowship, a NASA Faculty Fellowship, the Oak Ridge Institute of Science and Education fellowship, and the Brain Korea Distinguished Faculty Fellowship.He worked as a research engineer for the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C., prior to joining the faculty of Whiting School of Engineering in 1998.

Marco Anni is Associate Professor of Experimental Physics at University of Salento (Italy). From 2006 he is Director of the Photonic Laboratory of the Matematics and Physics Department. He graduated in Physics in 1998 and completed his PhD in Physic in 2001, both at the University of Salento. His main research expertise is in the field of optical spectroscopy of semiconductors, mainly conjugated molecules and lead halide perovskites, with particular attention to ligth amplification and lasing processes.

Pargam Vashishtha is a joint research fellow in Optoelectronic devices at RMIT University of Australia & AcSIR, India. He is doing his PhD under the supervision of Prof. Sumeet Walia (RMIT, Australia) and Prof. Govind (AcSIR, India). He joined CSIR-National Physical Laboratory, India, as a research fellow (University Grant Commission’s JRF fellowship with All India Rank-2). He was awarded an M. Phil degree with University Gold Medallist in the year 2017 by the Ch. Charan Singh University, Meerut, India. Now, he mainly engages in fundamental and applied research focusing on micro/nanophotonic, optical materials, harsh environments, stable optoelectronic devices, III-Nitrides semiconductors, Vander Waals Materials and Scientific Paper Writing. He has authored over 60 journals in Nature, ACS, Wiley, IOP, etc. He participated in several national and international meetings as a presenter of photodetectors.

Jin Lihas been theProfessor in the College of Mechanical and Electronic Engineering at Northwest A&F University, China since Mar. 2023. He served as the Lecturer, Associate Professor and Research Fellow in the College of Information Science and Engineering, Northeastern University, China during Dec. 2013 to Feb. 2023. He also worked as a Visiting Fellow in the Australian National University for one year in 2017. He was born in the city of Yuncheng, Shan Xi Province, China in Dec. 1983. Riccardo Meucci was born in Scandicci (Firenze, Italy) in 02/03/1956. Meng Shi received the Ph.D. degree from Peking University in 2015. He is currently a professor in Technology and Engineering Center for Space Utilization, Chinese Academy of Sciences. His current research interest is quantum sensing and precision measurement, mainly on microwave receiving based on Rydberg atom.

Yifei Zhang received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering at the Beijing Institute of Technology, China, in 2006 and 2009, respectively, and his Ph.D. degree at the University of Delaware, DE, US in 2016. He is currently an associate professor and the vice-director of the Center of Nanoelectronics in the School of Integrated Circuits, Shandong University, China. His research interests include millimeter-wave and terahertz 3-D circuits and electronic devices, active metamaterials, microwave-photonic devices, high-frequency integration and packaging, and their applications. He has published more than 50 international papers and more than 10 patents/patent applications. He is serving as an editorial board member and/or guest editor of two international journals.

Shiqiang Xia received his Ph.D. in physics from Nankai university in 2016. He then joined Henan Normal University, where he is now an assistant professor of the university’s quantum physics group. Research Interests: Xia’s current research interest is light dynamics in periodic optical media, mainly on non-Hermitian topological photonics in waveguide arrays.

Nelli Mosavi is a Principle Professional Staff and a Program Manager at the Space Exploration Sector at Johns Hopkins University, Applied Physics Laboratory. Over the years, she has worked in various NASA spacecraft missions such as MESSENGER, Van Allen Probes, Solar Parker Probe, DART and Europa Clipper. Over the last 5 years her focus has been managing complex NASA space missions such Van Allen Probes and currently NASA’s Electrojet Zeeman Imaging Explorer (EZIE) mission – a mission to study electrical currents in Earth’s upper atmosphere EZIE mission. She received a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from Oakland University Michigan, an M.S. in Electrical Engineering from The Johns Hopkins University and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

I received a master's degree in electrical engineering from the National University of Science and Technology, Pakistan, in 2017 and a Ph.D. in electrical, electronic, and communication engineering from the Politecnico di Torino, Torino, Italy, in 2022. I am currently a postdoctoral researcher in the OptCom group at Politecnico di Torino. My primary research interests are software-defined optical networks, artificial intelligence, network automation, photonics networks, and exploring machine learning applications in the direction of cognitive optical networks.

Dr. Vijayan K. Asari is a Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering and Ohio Research Scholars Endowed Chair in Wide Area Surveillance at the University of Dayton, Dayton, Ohio, USA. He is the director of the Center of Excellence for Computational Intelligence and Machine Vision (Vision Lab) at UD. Dr. Asari'sresearch focuses in the development of algorithms and architectures for automatic object detection, recognition and tracking in wide area surveillance imagery captured by visible, infrared, thermal, multi-spectral, hyperspectral, and LiDAR (light detection and ranging) sensors. His research activities also include 3D scene creation from 2D video streams, 3D scene change detection, automatic visibility improvement of images captured in various weather conditions (low lighting, haze/fog, and rain), human identification by face recognition, human action and activity recognition, and human expression analysis. Dr. Asari received his M Tech and PhD degrees in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras in 1984 and 1994 respectively. Prior to joining the University of Dayton in February 2010, Dr. Asari worked as Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Virginia for 10 years. Dr. Asari worked at National University of Singapore during 1996-98 and led a research team for the development of a vision-guided micro-robotic endoscopy system. He also worked at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore during 1998-2000 and led the computer vision and image processing related research activities in the Center for High Performance Embedded Systems at NTU.Dr. Asari had been working as Assistant Professor in electronics and communications at TKM College of Engineering, Kollam until he left for Singapore in 1996.Dr. Asari holds fiveUnited States patents and has published more than 750 research articles including an edited book in wide area surveillanceand 135 peer-reviewed journal papers in the areas of image processing, pattern recognition, machine learning, neural networks and high-performance embedded systems. Dr. Asari has supervised 32PhD dissertations and 48 MS theses during his tenure. Currently several graduate students are working with him in different sponsored research projects. Hehas been participating in various federal and private funded research projects and he has so far managed around $27M research funding. Dashan Qin received his PhD degree of polymer chemistry and physics from Changchun institute ofapplied chemistry, Chinese Academy of Science in Jul. 2001. Then, he worked as apostdoc with Prof. Karl Leo in IAPP of TU Dresden, German for one year. From Jan.2003 to Dec. 2004, he worked as an assistant research officer in IMS, NationalResearch Council Canada. From Mar. 2005 to Sep. 2007, he worked as a professor inInstitute of semiconductor, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Since Oct.2007, he has been a professor in Hebei University of Technology, China. His current researchinterests are in the physics and materials of organic light emitting diodes and organic solar cells. Hehas published more than 60 peer-reviewed papers.

Dr. Valentin Ion is presently employed as scientific researcher, II rd. degree at the National Institute for Lasers, Plasma and Radiation Physics (INFLPR), Magurele, Romania in the department of Innovation Center in Photonics and Plasma for Advanced Materials and Technologies (FOTOPLASMAT). He graduated from the Faculty of Physics of the University of Bucharest. The master degree and the Phd thesis were done in collaboration between University of Bucharest and INFLPR Magurele. His area of expertise is laser/plasma processing of perovskite materials for electronics, sensors and biomedical applications.He has published over 76 articles and is currently leading the Laboratory 2 - Analysis, Characterization, Testing at the FOTOPLASMAT departments of INFLPR, Romania.

Nuno Ferreira is a PhD in Physics Engineeringand currently is a researcher at i3N, Physics Department at the University of Aveiro, Portugal. He had coordinated and participated in more than 10 national and international research R&D projects on material science. He is doing research in ceramics-based materials, prepared through conventional methods (melting, solid stated), with a particular interest in laser processing materials (crystal growth – LFZ and surface sintering/modification). Present sample preparation and characterization skills include various techniques such as electrical conductivity and magnetic properties of several oxide materials. Current focus materials: thermoelectrics, ferroelectrics and glass matrices doped with transition metals and rare earth for energy harvesting (storage and conversion) applications. His main expertise is related to the structural, magnetic and electrical properties of materials prepared by laser processing. Author of 1 book chapter, co-author of 6 national patents, 2 international patents, more than 75 papers and 12 conference participations as an invited speaker and more than 100 poster presentations. He supervised 3 PhD students, 15 master's students and 9 post-graduates.

Luismar Barbosa da Cruz Junior earned his Bachelor's degree in Physics from the Federal University of Uberlândia (Brazil) in 2016. During this period, he gained experience in the synthesis and characterization of nanostructured glasses designed for ionizing radiation shielding. In 2018, he obtained a Master's degree in Physics from the same institution, working with optical instrumentation to analyze biological parameters through spatial frequency domain imaging techniques. In 2021, while engaged in his doctoral studies, Luismar received the prestigious CAPES-Print exchange scholarship. This opportunity led him to the Institute for Laser Technologies in Medicine and Measurement Technology at the University of Ulm (Germany). In 2023, Luismar successfully completed his doctoral program in Applied Physics in Medicine and Biology at the University of São Paulo (Brazil). His research during this period focused on the exploration of optical properties, with an emphasis on their relevance to human health and the skin phototype's influence on optical diagnosis. Currently, Luismar serves as a temporary professor at the Federal Institute of Education, Science, and Technology of São Paulo (Brazil). His research interests encompass a wide array of topics, including optical applications in medicine, spectroscopy, biophotonics, tissue simulators (phantoms), Monte Carlo simulations, photoacoustics, and education. He brings a substantial background in experimental physics to his academic and research endeavors

Dr. Ilya Fine was completed his Ph.D in Physics (1990) at Hebrew University, Jerusalem and on Thesis: Skin and Eye Oximetry and his Professional Experience was working as a Researcher (1990-1993) at Hebrew University of Jerusalem as well as Co-founder, Cybro Medical Ltd (1994-1998) and Founder and CTO, Orsense Ltd (1998-2005). Since 2006-present he is a Founder, Elfi-Tech Ltd in Israel. His expertise extends to various domains, including hemoglobin measurement, blood pressure monitoring, and innovative spectroscopy methodologies. Patents and publications underscore a his significant impact on the field of non-invasive medical measurements.

Hongpu Li received the B.S. and M.S. degrees from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China, in 1985 and 1988, respectively, and received the Ph.D. degree from Shizuoka University, Hamamatsu, Japan, in 2000. From 2000 to 2003, first, he was with the NEC Research Institute, NJ, the Phaethon Communication Inc., CA, USA, and the Laval University, Canada, respectively. In April of 2003, he joined in Shizuoka University, Japan, where he is a full professor at the Dept. of Engineering, Faculty of Engineering. His research interests include nonlinear fiber optics, fiber gratings, fiber sensors, all-optical signal processing, and nanophotonics etc. He has authored more than 300 refereed journal and conference papers and held a couple of patents in U.S.A, Japan, and China, respectively. Dr. Li is a Member of IEICE, OSA, and IEEE Photonics Society.

Baojun Li, Distinguished Professor, Dean of Institute of Nanophotonics in Jinan University, and Director for Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Nanophotonic Manipulation, China. He received his Ph.D from Xi’an Jiaotong University in China in 1998. After that, he worked in Fudan University, China, as a Postdoctoral Fellow till 2000. From 2000 to 2002, he worked in Singapore-MIT Alliance, first as a Postdoctoral Fellow, then as a Research Fellow. From April to October 2002, he worked in Institute of Materials Research and Engineering in Singapore as a Research Fellow. In October 2002, he joined Sun Yat-Sen University in China as a full Professor and served as Director for Research Laboratory for Optoelectronic Integration. From May to November 2009, he worked in University of Oxford as a senior visiting scholar. Then, he came back to Sun Yat-Sen University as Cheung Kong Scholar Distinguished Professor and served as Dean of School of Physics and Engineering. In November 2016, he moved to Jinan University in Guangzhou, China, where he founded the Institute of Nanophotonics and Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Nanophotonic Manipulation.

Ryosuke Homma received his Ph.D. in Engineering from Kyoto university in 2021. He specialises in environmental engineering and works as a Program-Specific Researcher at Kyoto University. His research interest is in the development of photocatalytic water reclamation technology. He aims to design efficient treatment systems for pathogenic micro-organisms (e.g. E. coli) and persistent chemicals (e.g. residual pharmaceuticals and PFAS) present in the aquatic environment, using light sources such as low-pressure mercury lamps, UV-LED and sunlight to evaluate the 'water quality' and 'water quantity' aspects.

Eduardo F. Fernández obtained his PhD at the University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain) in 2012 in the field on concentrator photovoltaics and multi-junction solar cells. Nowadays, he is head of the Advances in Photovoltaic Technology research group (AdPVTech; https://adpvtech.ujaen.es/en/home/) at the University of Jaén (Spain). He has more than 10 years of experience in the field of photovoltaics working in several prestigious institutes, universities and private companies. Dr. Fernández has been involved and lead more than 25 research projects, published over 130 papers indexed in ISI JCR, and presented more than 100 contributions in the most relevant international conferences and workshops. Dr. Fernández is also member of +10 academic and scientific societies, and co-inventor of several patents.

Masaki Asobe received the B.E. and M.E. degrees in instrumentation engineering from Keio University, Kanagawa, Japan, in 1987, 1989, respectively. He received the Ph.D. degree in nonlinear optics from the same university in 1995. In 1989, he joined the NTT Laboratories, Kanagawa, Japan, where he had been engaged in the studies of nonlinear optical devices such as ultrafast all-optical switches and broadband wavelength converters as well as high speed optical communication systems. In 2013, he joined Tokai University, Kanagawa, Japan. He is currently a professor in the department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

Ephraim Suhir is on the faculty of the Portland State University, Portland, OR, USA, and Bordeaux Univ., France. He is also CEO of a Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) ERS Co. in Los Altos, CA, USA, is Foreign Full Member of the National Academy of Engineering, Ukraine (he was born in that country); Life Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the Society of Optical Engineers (SPIE), and the International Microelectronics and Packaging Society (IMAPS); Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS), the Institute of Physics (IoP), UK, and the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE); and Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). Ephraim has authored 500+ publications, presented numerous plenary, keynote, invited and contributed talks and taught continued education courses worldwide. He received many professional awards, including 1996 Bell Labs. Distinguished Member of Technical Staff (DMTS) Award (for developing effective methods for predicting the reliability of complex structures used in AT&T and Lucent Technologies products), and 2004 ASME Worcester Read Warner Medal (for outstanding contributions to the permanent literature of engineering and laying the foundation of a new discipline “Structural Analysis of Electronic Systems”). He is the third “Russian American”, after S. Timoshenko and I. Sikorsky, who received this prestigious award. Ephraim's most recent awards are 2023 SHEN International Research Award on Science, Health and Engineering" for the paper "Probabilistic Fitts' Law and the Likelihod of the Tunguska Type of Event", Journal of Space Safety Engineering, 10(1), March 2023"; 2019 IEEE Electronic Packaging Society (EPS) Field award (for seminal contributions to mechanical reliability engineering and modeling of electronic and photonic packages and systems); 2019 IMAPS Lifetime Achievement award (for making exceptional, visible, and sustained impact on the microelectronics packaging industry and technology) and 2022 IEEE SCV Section Outstanding Engineer award (for seminal contributions to several critical IEEE fields, including probabilistic design-for-reliability of microelectronic and photonic materials, devices and systems, and the role of the human factor).

Dr. Mohamed Fathy Abo Sree currently holds the esteemed position of Associate Professor within the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering at the Arab Academy for Science Technology and Maritime Transport, situated in Cairo, Egypt. Being a native of Egypt, Dr. Abo Sree has demonstrated a strong commitment to academic and professional excellence. His academic journey includes the successful completion of the Master of Science (M.Sc.) program at the Arab Academy for Science and Technology (AASTMT) in 2013. Subsequently, he pursued and earned a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Ain Shams University in Egypt in 2019, solidifying his expertise in the field.
